Workaround: Turning off the MTVU Hack for multi core systems seems to fix this.

and newer builds, PCSX2 now has auto-gamefixes (12) to fix this bug for all three versions of the game. The old workaround was to set EE/FPU Rounding mode to "Negative" before going near the staircase where the bug occurs.
Workaround: This is actually a bug in the game, not PCSX2. Description: Mid game you will find that some areas do not load (black rectangle where a doorway should be). Also used cheatengine to teleport my character into the forge, and verify that the bug where an area doesn't load properly, is fixed on dev-3007.wgarvin Trivia Played about an hour of the beginning of the game (SLPS-25057). This anomalous behavior was only observed in the lava pools of the first map of the game. Hardware Mode is observed to, in addition to displaying artifacting in the skybox and some liquid pools, cause some (but strangely not all) lava pools to fail to render and thus be invisible, regardless of internal resolution settings. Game played from start to finish with consistent 100% speed and seemingly no emulation bugs.
